Why do men get protective of their women?

It's a good quality and there are a lot of dangerous creeps out there. I once had to straighten a guy up trying to take my sister home from a club with her hardly fit to stand. Another time a guy thought he could try and make out and molest my girl while I went to the bathroom, and when she pushed him off he hit her. Took me two weeks to get him.
Also there are guys who hang about women hoping to score by catching them at an emotionally vulnerable moment or stir up trouble in her relationship. Nothing wrong with walking a girl home or picking her up after a nightshift or a night out with her friends.

Historically, birth control and condoms weren't a thing for most of the existence of humanity. Men didn't want to invest their hard earned resources on someone else's child, thinking it was his own. From a purely genetic standpoint, males who were overly protective of their women were more likely to raise their own children instead of someone else's, and so protectiveness would be evolutionarily advantageous.

It stems back to the time before contraceptives where men and society would almost completely deny women the right to express themselves sexually, much less wander out of the house on their own, to give men a sense of certainty that certain children were most definitely theirs.
