What does it mean when a guy playfully "scares" you?

So this guy I'm friends with will come up behind me and "scare" me, by grabbing my shoulders then giggle/laugh afterwards, but never in a malicious way, always just playful. While I was kneeling on a dock he came up behind me grabbed my waist and pretended to push me in, of course he wouldn't actually let me fall, but he does this a lot. I was watching a scary movie with him and he did it at least three times during a 30 minute period... I also know he is a shy/introverted person, but I'm not sure if that means anything.

We were actually sitting shoulders together alone on a couch, that could have fit four, for like two hours until 3am. I probably should have included that too lol...

Uh, I don't see a direct correlation between a supposed friend coming in physical contact with you, and him possessing romantic feelings for you. It's a bit awkward to sit too far apart, and I suppose it's also awkward to touch when there's enough room to refrain from doing so. Eh, I don't know. Maybe he likes you, maybe he doesn't. There's not blatant and valid enough evidence that would emphatically substantiate the surmise that he has feelings for you. But then again, he may be hesitant to reveal his feelings lest the feelings not being exchanged. Analyze his body language and try to infer to something from there. If I was an acquaintance of an attractive girl whom I like, I would make it very obvious from the get go, but that's just me, though. Give it some time, and if the direction of the relationship doesn't take any turns, talk to him about it.

It's going to be very obvious. Mainly because it's uncontrollable. He's going to unconsciously emit signs that he wouldn't otherwise. The fact that he's physical with you could be an indicative, but I would dismiss it as insubstantial, because it could potentially be a part of his character and charisma. Yes, even though he's shy. "Shy" is not a character quality, it's simply the impeded ability to socialize with people efficiently. I'm shy, but that's around people I'm not comfortable with. Same with him.

Firm, but affectionate and consistent eye contact, occasional smiling, patent change in his demeanor, change in his charisma and personality (to what he thinks might appeal to you), and minimal flirting. It could also be compliments.

Everyone's different I like where you're coming from in regards to shyness. Anyway, he isn't vocal with his feelings, his last girlfriend broke up with him (this was a while ago) because he wasn't good at showing affection. But when he was with me he'd act in a way that made me jump to conclusions or romanticize I suppose. In addition to what I've told you, he would also take my phone a few times and hold it in such a way where the only way for me to grab it was to lay completely across his lap as he held it out away from me. He also didn't move away while I was on top of him until finally I grabbed the phone, but he did this a few times. I also associated his actions with shyness because he only acted that why when it was just the two of us. When other people were around he is completely different. So is this something you would consider "flirting" when coupled with the other instances I've mentioned?

Alright so the eye contact is there and he smiles, but I've just considered that part of his character while the physical stuff did not seem like something he would do. It certainly isn't something he has done with me before until recently.

What he's doing is basically flirting disguised as innocent, friendly playfulness. If what you're saying is true, then I believe he does like you, but he's shy, and your relationship with him is already established as platonic, so he's finding it difficult to communicate that to you through confrontational, or overt flirting, so he resorts to awkward shit like indirectly forcing you to sit on his dick, and rubbing shoulders for consecutive hours. Time will tell. Don't get ahead of yourself, and stay composed. Wait for more cues, and read through his body language.
