The major complaint of almost every woman is that guys go from zero to light speed (with afterburners kicked in) thinking it's romantic, or sensual. On top of that, guys are not responsive enough at picking up on the woman's signals that she's not enjoying it.
If it's a problem, talk to him. Open the line of communication, and tell him what you want.
If need be, show him - I seriously doubt he would have a problem learning how to please you.

You just don't understand how desirable and irresistible a girl is from a guy's point of view which makes it hard for us to hold back. We just wanna taste the girl in every possible way we can.
Hey girls do it too. There is a certain amount of formality to the proper kiss. It's not just guys that do it. I have to almost train every woman I'm with how. Not obviously of course but they come around reguardless.
