Why does my friend put me down about guys?

It seems as though any attractive guy who shows interest in me, my friend always tells me “he just wants sex” or “he just wants attention” or “he’s not even into you.” Why does she always tell me this?

I suspect she believes she'll become a side character because she isn't in a relationship while you are with a man that is attractive.

If she doesn't get attractive men showing interest in her as often, it could be becoming clear in her mind that she and you are in different leagues, which can be a painful realisation, especially with someone you're close to, so she is in denial and insists that there must be a negative to an attractive man wanting you (this denial makes her feel like she is in your league).

She is in a relationship, but even when she was single she was like this, always telling me guys aren’t into me if I like them

The same logic follows with a slight alteration: she is in denial that you're in the same league because she believed that she was in a higher league than you to begin with (so she prided herself on that).

I can't give an accurate gauge because I don't know details such as which of you is more attractive, who gets more glances etc.

Well I don’t like to compare myself to my friends, but I do get more attention than her and I am considered to be very attractive. She’s pretty too though in my opinion.

You confirmed my suspicions. Of course you'd say she is pretty in your opinion but I'll take that to mean she's just normal/slightly above average. And the fact people say you're attractive is another confirmation of my first theory.

She could be just looking out for you but either way you don’t need that negativity. Your friend has clearly been scarred by guys in her lifetime and is unintentionally bringing that hateful mindset onto you.


Don’t tell her anymore when guys do nice things for you.

I don’t know why though, she has had more relationships than I have, and long term ones at that. But she’s always put me down about guys for no reason
