Do guys not think hypothetically about situations?

For example- this guy and I were dating and he has to move away for a year. So we’re not attempting long distance since it’s awhile and we’ll just see when he returns. We both have feelings for each other, and so I asked him if the situation was different would we be something more? And he almost got angry with me and was like “but it’s not any different so why would you ask that?” ... I guess I asked it because I wanted to know if he wishes it were that way/his feelings for me/and I do like thinking what if’s... that’s just what I do.
Do guys not do this since I know there are differences in thinking and love with guys.

In my experience, not as often as women do. I had a good friend at work. Beautiful woman, but I had a girlfriend and she had a boyfriend. We were nothing more than good friends and had lunch together frequently. I worked mostly with women and they were always asking me if she was single if I'd go out with her. I'd just answer that she wasn't single, so it wasn't something I had to think about, let alone answer. Any answer to that question could potentially make things awkward. Why do women do that? lol

No. There's absolutely no point, so we don't do it, especially if it's unpleasant.

In rare cases, we might. But we're more likely to have hypotheticals like "If 5 ninjas suddenly burst into this room, what could I use as a weapon?" rather than "If I wasn't moving away, would I be getting engaged within a year?"

So asking him if we would be something more if he wasn’t moving isn’t worth asking?

dunno if that's a guys thing, seems to be a specific situation, in this case I think he doesn't want to think about it because it will only cause him pain and won't change anything
