I think a lot of girls look better in casual clothes rather than decorated ones, a lot of men prefer the natural look, which is why many men say they do not like make up on a woman but every person, both male and female has unique preferences that can’t be predicted just on survey data alone.
While I like my girl to be comfortable at home, if we were going someplace, I would prefer that she wore a dress (or skirt), unless that was impractical (camping, or a trip to an amusement park, etc.).
My first guess is that your boyfriend is jealous and doesn't want other guys looking at you, so he prefers you to dress down so that you don't draw so much attention from other guys.
Honestly, I don’t really like dresses on women either. For formal occasions, I tolerate or understand them, but unless she’s wearing certain dresses that I like then most of the time I just don’t find them personally appealing on a woman.
More “casual” wear is much better.

I personally think depends the scenario. I love seeing my girlfriend in jogging pants when we are relaxing. I like casual clothes, but if we are going to a formal event.. I love seeing her dressed up
