Why does my boyfriend not like it when I wear revealing clothes?

So my boyfriend always comments before we go out together on what I wear. If I want to wear a top which is low cut he will comment on it and tell me that he doesn’t want other guys looking at my boobs and says ‘they are for me to look at only’. The other night I told him I was going out with a few friends and I showed him the dress I was going to wear, and it was a short dress and low cut so my boobs were on show, and he commented on it saying ‘I don’t want you going out in that and getting unwanted attention from guys’ and ‘that looks like a dress you’d go clubbing in and you don’t seem like that sort of girl’

I'm confused about how your confused here. Most boyfriends don't want their girlfriends wearing revealing clothes. It's nearly universal. And the reasoning is essentially exactly what he told you.

It comes down to: If you have a boyfriend, why are you choosing to dress in a way that's meant to appeal directly to the sexual appetite of other men?

It's one thing to disagree with him. But it's concerning that you're having trouble understanding where he's coming from.

If you still are confused, you can feel free to DM me, and I'll explain a few things about guys and how they view girls. You're missing some pretty key things if you genuinely don't understand why he would have a problem with this (why 95% of guys would have a problem with this).

Now he doesn't get to control what you wear specifically. But... he shouldn't have to. You should act AND dress appropriate. I'm sure you act appropriate for someone in a relationship. You dress appropriate for someone in a relationship for similar reasons. Mostly, respect.

I don't know how to answer this without going into a whole shpeel about "the two different types of girls" (which is long. I've done it before).

Every man is different so I can't speak with him and he just may prefer a modest look in his woman. Nothing wrong with that and it might just have to be something u ha e to decide if your okay with or not.

However it may be insecurity. My ex made me insecure. I hated when she showed off her body but I guess deep down I couldn't trust her to be loyal and I felt that. My new girl is much hotter get way more attention objectively but I know in my hear I can trust her. I know she mine and she would never let another man touch her. So something weird happen. I actually prefer her in revealing clothing when she with me. She has amazing boobs so I'm always trying to get her to have more cleavage and to leave the bra at home. I'm secure and I like seeing them so why freak out if someone get a peak I know I'm the only one I that can touch them. He'll of she tool her top off in a jaquizz I would be like yup my girl sexy af guys go ahead and stare but she mine. Vs I hated if my ex wore a shirt that was nippy even a little or if u can see her thong through her legging. Total opposite.

So maybe talk to ur guy and ask yourself is there anything i can honestly do to make him feel more secure and can he 100% trust me. Also be ready to accept that he may just prefer modesty

@mollyb2939 - Because he WANTS you to RESPECT yourself, RESPECT him, and RESPECT your relationship. It is THAT simple.  See women that wear overly revealing clothes typically do NOT respect themselves, they turn themselves into nothing more than a sexual object desperately seeking the attention of men like prostitutes but being too stupid to charge.  Women that respect themselves after all can get a man's attention through her conduct, being respectful, etc. without ever having to dress or act revealingly / cheap.  . But, to be blunt, as you DO NOT respect yourself, your boyfriend or your relationship do him a MASSIVE favour and break up. You'll never be someone worth a long meaningful relationship if you can't understand something so basic.

I had a boyfriend like that once. He scolded me once for wearing a sundress (which are my favorite) that had a big v neck, so some generous cleavage. I told him the one time that while he is indeed my partner, he is not to pretend that he has control over me nor talk to me in that sort of manner ever again. Few weeks later, I'm going out to the gym. I was wearing tights and a sports bra. Ooooh he screamed at me for dressing like a "Hooker Barbie..." That relationship lasted 2 months. It's one thing to voice that you don't feel comfortable with something your partner is doing, but you talk about it, not talk down to them and raise your voice. I have 0 tolerance for that bullshit.

Simple... he knows that you wearing revealing clothes is a signal to other dudes that you're still on the market. A lot of guys are too dumb to know this. I'm not saying you're obligated to respect his wishes. It's not like you're married. But it's a sign that you two aren't compatible. You see, if you actually viewed him as 'the one', you would not even be asking this question. You would be covering up more because you know 1.) he has the ability to go get another woman and you wouldn't want that so by covering up you are giving him incentive to trust you more, 2.) You don't want attention from other dudes 'like that'.

Of course 'revealing clothes' is subjective. One guy's idea of that is different than another. And it's also true that some women dress like nuns but are total sluts. This is all about perception and not necessarily what is actually happening. Sort of like marketing in various industries.

He sounds conservative, not a bad thing from my POV, but I'm not a prude either. There must be some middle ground, between what is "okay" and what is not acceptable to him.

I had a wonderful woman friend, who was from Trinidad, and she wanted me to 'unbutton' a few of the top buttons on a dress shirt. I always left the top button undone (whenever I wore a dress shirt) Never liked or did the 'unbuttoned' shirt look at any time, and that is the ONLY dress thing we disagreed on. I had a 'manager' at work that was married to a 'Mexican' nice woman and he did the unbuttoned shirt thing.

Doesn't sound like a 'major' issue for you two, but to keep him from being 'pissed' I would just 'button up' when with him and do what you like when with other girls out.

Sounds like he has a skewed concept of how you dress. Perhaps he thought you chose certain cloths to catch his eye. When in reality you were wearing cloths that you felt looked sexy and cute. If you don’t let him know that you aren’t dressing for him and that he is not in control of how you dress… you may end up with a real issue.
