Why is he talking bad about me to friends we have in common? We talked for a couple of months, went on a date etc. I always played hard to get and never really showed him I was fully interested.

Playing hard to get is for fools. How does you showing interest make you come off as desperate? He thought you were not interested in him, and maybe he thought you were leading him on? That ship has sailed. If you really did like him, I don't think he is going to go on another date with you. Please don't waste your time. Please show interest when you go on a date with a guy. Fawning over a guy is desperate, showing interest ain't.
