My friend helped me through my divorce whilst he was fighting his own battles why did he do that?

My friend of three years helped me though two years of my divorce after my wife of 7 years whom I loved cheated on me. I found out today he was broken to bits himself from something similar also at the time his family member was also going through serious health issues. But he never once showed his pain. He was a rock and he supported me always. I feel bad now. why did he do this?
