A guy I like seems to look at me when I enter the hall or class but looks elsewhere I look at him and want to say hi, he's usually confident then why?

He definitely is confident from what I've heard of him and I know he definitely seems to avoid eye contact when I try to say hi after I locate him in the room or hallway... we don't talk much I don't know if I should talk to him or leave him alone..

You don't want to listen to what you've heard about him. To me? He sounds as if he is very shy, at least around you. That could be because he likes you (or not).

The question is how will you find out? If the roles were reversed and I was in your position as a guy.. I would go over and speak to her, just about anything. I would know straight away if she liked me or not..

No reason you can't approach him and say hello... start up a conversation. He might be really nervous around you if he is into you. That could be the reason for the glances but actions that say "shy".
