Guy's Behavior

Why would a guy look at me and also directly smile at me when we pass each other on the way to class?

I'm in college & there's this super cute guy I always pass on my way to a certain class. The days I have seen him, he's made very direct eye contact with me and given me a sort of side-eye look out of the corner of his eyes like he's checking me out

The last time I saw him in passing, he locked eyes with me and directly smiled at me (closed mouth). It seemed like he was happy to see me and then smiled even a little bit bigger because of it. I smiled back really quick after I realized what happened.

Thoughts on why a guy would do this? is he just friendly or is he attracted? I think he's super cute and I would love to meet him, but im not sure how to facilitate that happening.
