What would you do if a stranger come up to you and told you they were a murderer ?

The other day at my job this really creepy looking dude was sitting at the bar and he was telling everyone that he’s a murderer and that he likes to cut off peoples limbs

he got sat at a table and I guess he was asking his server mad questions like “how old are you? Where do you live?”
and then he tried to ask another server for her number.

After he left he was just standing outside the restaurant…so I was bringing out all the female servers to their cars. If I was in the bar and I heard him saying all that, I would of called the cops tbh. Even if he was just some mental case talking out of his ass, better safe than sorry

There's a dual dilemma, paradoxically CLEARLY he's seeking to elicit attention... he perceives himself as being discounted, disenfranchised. Society at-large is largely ignoring his presence. He, has chosen, to reach out TO YOU.

Like a frustrated child, he believes he needs to PROVOKE his audience to take his presence SERIOUSLY. Better NEGATIVE attention than to be simply IGNORED as a 'weirdo'... 'fear' and disgust IS a form of (albeit negative) social prestige.
BUT... RECIPROCALLY he may be seriously mentally-ill.

GENUINE Predators RARELY announce themselves amid potential Prey.
Perhaps like many, his conscience is latently nagging him and he has not the mental fortitude to turn himself in for society's approbation and potential treatment. But now, comes the issue.

Aware of these paradoxical potentials, were YOU to ignore these and to later learn you WERE dealing with an as yet UN-apprehended serial killer,,, can YOU justify YOUR conscience's apathetic inaction?

Remember, societal 'law' is predicated upon NOT upon what you HAVE done BUT INSTEAD to be PROVEN beyond reasonable doubt, what you HAVE DID, ... to 12 allegedly unbiased citizens (who are IN NO WAY your Peers!).
Cynical perhaps but in reality, 'pragmatic' and contextually 'insightful' ----

i remember being a teenager. this was back before cellphones and the internet. i was 12 and needed a smoke. i know. so i was waiting on a friend to meet me at the arcade before we went to the movies. and i need a light. there was a guy dressed in all black. he was smoking and so i asked him for a light. we struck up a conversation which was unbelievable. he said he was a hitman. i was as skeptical as anyone would be. so we talked and i finished my smoke. i left the conversation not knowing whether he was a liar, a sociopath or a hitman.

I'd be creeped out and would get up and go out or in the washroom and call the cops and tell them everything. He could have really killed or he was just delusional. Either way, I think it's best to alert the cops, so they could keep an eye on him and do some background check. Because if he has really killed someone, there's a high chance that he'll kill one more. Most of them can't seem to stop once they kill someone. I'd rather not put others lives at danger by ignoring what he said than alerting the cops

I would of told him oh yeah, you fucked up right here and put your fucking hands on the table and keep them there. And if he flinched or even sneezed he would of caught a bottle upside the head and have the waitress call the cops. I’m not one for calling cops but in this situation he at least needs to get evaluated and investigated or the next victim could be someone you care about. When I was a kid I knew an older dude really just seen him around and met him a couple times but he was suspected of killing his girlfriends mom it was pretty brutal but they didn’t have enough of a case to bring charges so it was unsolved ten years later dude found Jesus and turned himself in and gave up his girlfriend when he confessed. I always got a bad vibe off the dude the few times I seen him and always figured he was guilty

I had a guy in a bar tell me he was going to go home and kill his wife.

this was years back and a bunch of us where at the pub and I was getting drinks in, chatting to barmaid etc.

then this guy starts talking to me, really off it mentally, he showed me his bag with a new kitchen knife he had just bought.

We did have the police called on him, then discretely took him away.

If he was a serial Killer he will probably go down as the world's worse and only manage to get himself killed. I've studied serial killers and most are far from the creepy stereotype and the high body count look like the boy next door some are even helpful respected members of of the community at least that is until someone stumbled onto all the bodies buried under their house.

Well, I would first repeat it back to them then I would ask them who they killed. I would let them talk to see if they weren't just some schizo on a bender. Then perhaps encourage them to confess. Get as much info and report them to the police to see if they could investigate it further. Are you a murderer who wants to get it off your chest?

This reminds me of the joke about a hitch hiker getting picked up. He tells the driver, "thanks for picking me up. That guy you mentioned, I would just laugh at him because yup he's totally a killer. And if he carried on his antics I would probably punch him.

If some attractive woman however came up to me like "Hey you wanna know something... I murder people." I would be very intrigued instead.

Tell the manager of your job call the police and tell the manager to send security camera footage to the police for investigation. And ask the servers who had to talk to him whether she was okay, and if she or he ever needed help just remember to call you.

Always better safe than sorry. I would've done the same thing by walking the female servers to their car making sure that they're safe with leaving. These kind of people can't be trusted when they're talking like that. They can turn on a dime sometimes. Get away from people like that!

I think I'd find him fascinating but I wouldn't believe him so much. I actually ran into a bizarre pair of guys in Hawaii one time and they drew out a gun at the bar. But I don't think they intended to shoot anyone. They just didn't want to pay the bill. I'm not even sure it was loaded. They seemed to talk a lot bigger than what they were willing to do.

If a person says they are a killer, believe them. Maybe he was saying that because he wanted get caught - hoping SOMEONE would call the cops. If you the cops were called and checked him out, at least he would be on their radar for the future.

I would restrain him and get the cops involved. If he really is a murderer then he needs to be stopped. If he is bragging about his murders, odds are he is a serial killers and they literally cannot stop themselves. If he is not a murderer, he is too mentally unstable to be left alone for his own safety or that of others. Either way, he is a danger and I could not in good conscious let him walk away unchecked.
