The boss came into the room and was acting awkward?

Me and another girl were sorting files in a meeting room. I was crouched down writing on a box which is visible from the corridor, the other girl was away from view. The boss walked past and went into another office then came in. He asked what we were doing and rambling on (making the conversation last longer than needed as always) then asked the other girl if she was okay then left.

Why did he act awkward? He always does.
