Is he stringing me along?

I’ve been seeing this guy for almost 9 months now. About a month ago he referred to me as his ‘girlfriend’ to someone. I liked him doing it so I asked him if I am his girlfriend and he said yeah. I then told him he was my boyfriend. We’ve just been on holiday together for 12 days and had a great time with each other. Even there he told me I was his girlfriend. But now we’re back home he’s been a bit off with me. I went out for a drink yesterday with my friend and I text him saying some girl I work with who was also out had said to me “where is your boyfriend tonight?” His reply to this was ‘did you say “what boyfriend?”. I was taken aback so I asked him if he was my boyfriend. His reply was ‘Man friend’ and then ‘other half’. I was so confused so I asked him if I was his girlfriend. His response to this was ‘young chick friend’ and then he said ‘yes girl friend’. But he left a space in the middle of the word girlfriend. I was left feeling really hurt and confused by it and wondered if I was overthinking it but since we’d just come back off holiday together and he had been previously referring to me as his girlfriend I felt like my hurt feelings towards it were valid.
I haven’t asked him about it since. I was messaging him telling him I missed him but he said I was only saying it because I was drunk. At that point I was only tipsy. He was really off with me and I can’t understand why.
