Why does he avoid eye contact?

He has done a lot of stuff for me to assume he mutually likes me back. Basically except asking me out.

But he has been avoiding my eye contact CONSTANTLY. In a group he'll look and talk to all the guys except me. Obviously, he still talks and jokes with me but he doesn't look me in the eye. For me, eye contact is so big which is why I'm secretly frustrated.

I've tried cooling off and giving him space for myself. But to partially see how he reacts.

I think he might have noticed I gave some distance. He started making more small, critical comments. Then he tried joking more. Yet, still no eye contact.

What is up with this? I started doubting whether or not he actually liked me, if I did something, if he doesn't like me anymore, or what.

Assuming that he likes you back, the reason why he avoids eye contact is because he's nervous. He likes you and because of this attraction, he subconsciously avoids eye contact and acts differently around you. He may be trying to not come off as a nervous wreck, without letting the crush he has on you get in the way of his actions and behaviors. A lot guys get nervous around their crush, it's actually a very normal thing and more common than most girls would expect.

Keep in mind that this is assuming he likes you back, you'll have to provide more information about this signs for me to formulate a conclusion.

Wow, that is strange. I get you though... If someone can joke at me and joke with me AND not look me in the eye... is either sincere? I bet there is some research on eye-contact that explains this behavior... like a personality type or something.
