It simply signifies that he is not a great talker and has probably a lower IQ. Making sentences is probably not his forte and he is used to answer with monosyllables because he never learned to make full sentences.
To me, it is indicative that he skipped quite a few classes in his lifetime and that onomatopoeias and grunts are about his only way of communicating.
If you can, avoid that kind of people because they will take you down with them. They are likely not received a proper education and have been left alone for most of their lives.
Leave while you still can...

He has a preconceived notion or image of what it is like where you are from. Usually that comment, to a guy means that you are from somewhere tough…and you must be a tough person to endure.

  Okay. I’m familiar with Asiaespecially SE as I have Business and property over there. Did not mean to pry. Mostly the “Buddhist” countries but been in Qatar Indonesia and Malaysia etc…

  No we are just talking. At first I thought he said “damn” because I might be the first girl from my country he has talked to or it’s a country he’s never heard of but I could be wrong
