A guy offered a day he was off but then said "I'll let you know when I'm free" once he realized he was busy that day?

I asked a guy if he was free and he said on Sunday. I reminded him that his friend asked him to hang out that day previously. Then he realized that he had all these other projects for school and started listing reasons why he won't be free this coming week like previously established plans already with his friends. And school assignments that I know are difficult and constantly worried over. He said that his schedule is hectic and he'll let me know when he is actually free. I don't know if he listed reasons for the sole purpose of not being free to go on a date with me or if he genuinely wants to prove to me he isn't purposely brushing me off.

We got along well already and I made him laugh a couple times.

I already knew this guy was very busy and constantly stressed. But I don't know if this is a full blown rejection, a soft-rejection so he doesn't hurt my feelings, or that he will genuinely get back to me.

My reluctance to think it is not not a rejection is that he doesn't treat me or speak to me any different than he does his friends.
