How should I respond to this guy?

I was talking to this guy and it went south very badly after 7 months. Long story short he wouldn't commit to me. A week or two after we had a fight that ended our situationship, he already started getting with a new girl after he had told me it was going to take forever to get over me... damn two weeks. Anyway, we were at a college Halloween party and I looked real good to say the least. I didn't interact with him the whole party until the very end he said bye to me when he left and I said bye. My bye wasn't very enthusiastic however later in the night at around 5AM he texted me asking me "Did you have a good night". Why does he care to ask me if my night went well at 5 in the morning? Why is he even messaging me or thinking about me at 5AM when he was probably with another girl anyway? I haven't responded to his message, part of me wants to but another part of me doesn't. I want him back but at the same time he hurt me. So I'm confused on how to even communicate with him being in the same social group.

Sounds like there's definitely mutual vibes still happening for both of you.

But what do you mean by he wouldn't "commit" to you? Like didn't want to be "exclusive" or didn't want to take the relationship to the next step (which can mean lots of different things)... like what made you break it off?

I didn't break things off, he broke them off with me because his friend spread a rumor that we hooked up when we did not because the friend was jealous and wanted to get with me. And he told me he didn't want a relationship and he doesn't like labels after 7 months of me meeting his family, his friends, going on vacations with him, etc.

He sounds either immature or not interested in an exclusive relationship. From what you described I think either of those will be frustrating to continue to deal with so I think you'd be able to do better by just moving on and meeting someone else that's a better match for you. But I know it's not easy to just throw away feelings for someone you've been in a relationship with, and is natural to want to think about how it can work. But at some point you gotta trust your better instincts that see the red flags.

One question you need to ask yourself. What do you want in a relationship?

If you want something that may eventually lead to marriage and possibly a family one day, then this guy is not for you.

If you just want a casual friend to hang out with, then this might be the guy for you.

He probably saw you and you looked good and probably realized he missed you a bit. He probably thought he had another chance with you. However, that is not going to change the fact he won’t commit to you if you were to take another chance with him. It will be the same cycle over again
