Why would my ex lie about having a girlfriend?

It's my ex and we were like best friends at one point. I told him about a new guy in my life when he called one day and he got angry. Next day, even though he said he was single before, he switched up and said he had a girlfriend. I fact checked and he doesn't.

Why would a guy do this? He was on the phone the first time talking about how things could have worked out between us. He won't really talk to me now so... he might be talking to someone now but who knows

the behavior. The calling only once a week but when I call he doesn't answer or call back sometimes. Yesterday, I reached out before he could and he didn't answer but he called me back about 15 mins later. He seemed happy to talk to me but claimed his phone was about to die and that he was about to go inside a building
