He made it clear he was not into me on the first date, why is he asking for a second one?

I went out with a guy not so long ago, during the date I felt he was not attracted to me. He was very rude and distant towards me. But on messages he is very kind and flirtatious and even said that he wanted to kiss me but missed the chance on the first date. He asked for a second date, but I turned him down. His behaviour was very confusing for me. Why would he ask for a second date?
