Why did “gay” used to be an insult but isn’t nowadays?

Back when I was in high school boys would insult each other by saying you’re gay or use the f word but haven’t seen this as much lately.

I’ve noticed it too.
I think it’s due to Gen Z cancelling that behaviour to call someone “gay” as an insult.
Just think, the word “gay” used to mean happy.

Because, when gay was an insult, being gay was frowned upon and people would put down others with it. Long before that, gay simply meant, happy.
