At the base of it, men have a strong instinctual drive to spread our seed - to sleep with and ultimately impregnate as many different women as possible. Humans (homo sapiens) have been around for half a million years at least, and other earlier examples (Neanderthal, Cro-Magnon, etc.) much longer than that. Agriculture is only about 10,000 years old, and the first successful cities-states about 8,000 years old, which is only a blip of time. For most of human existence, people lived in small bands of people, typically around 40-100 in size, and interbreeding in such a small group would quickly lead to genetic problems. Thus, men biologically developed (almost certainly through Natural Selection) a strong drive for variation - to select multiple sex partners and from as many different groups as possible, which widened the gene pool and enhanced genetic diversity, which is necessary for survival.

With that foundation, let's skip right to modern times. Most cheaters have at least one of the two things in common: they are either very popular with women (good-looking, charismatic, and/or wealthy), or they grew up being taught poor morals and values. The first group - the popular ones - have usually been told that they are special, and were often treated better, not held accountable to the rules, and believe that they are better/more important than other people. The second group simply believes that rules, commitments, and vows are just things to be broken without a second thought, and normally they only care about what they want in the moment, with rarely any thoughts given to the future. The second group are overwhelmingly boys that grew up with a single mother - as in, no father in the household to provide discipline, guidance, and instill duty and honor.

What do you suppose happens when you take a strong base instinct to sleep around, and you add that to a person who is either spoiled/narcissistic or who doesn't have any morals and values? That's right: you get a cheater - usually an unapologetic, serial cheater.

Ironically, these are the very same men that most women chase and so desperately want to be with. Women see them as exciting and interesting because rule-breakers are exciting and interesting. Of course, they're also toxic, dangerous, and unpredictable - but most women do their best to ignore that or rationalize it away. They almost always end up getting hurt by these guys - yet, they usually go right back to chasing the same kind of guy again.

There’s a lot of reasons. Tired of their partner, not getting what they need at home. Done w the relationship even though they haven’t ended it. They like a challenge. They want to know if they’ve still got it. Can they still pull some ass after all these years. An ego boost from other women checking him out.

Why do men cheat, in short I'd say its when the girl they are currently with falls into a false sense of security that she's his only option. And then tries to hold the act of sex as hostage.
