I look at things from a more logical stance than many and I think the best answer here is from sociology, psychology and anthropology.

It’s a part of human nature for the make to have an instinctive drive to want to protect what he considers “his.” So for a lot of men, this concept of wanting take care of and protect a woman only develops once he sees a viable potential to be accepted by her. It will manifest often before she officially is “his” but only under circumstances that lead him to read her intentions as a positive toward his advances.

For me that means that A) she and I have what at least feels like the beginnings of sexual chemistry between us, B) she sends enough signals to make me feel like the chance is higher she will accept advances rather than reject them and C) there is an emotional bond developing.

A deficiency in these areas results in indifference (not complete disregard for her well-being but also not a drive to make an effort towards it either) and excessiveness of this drive, in regards to a man, results in possessiveness, envy and jealousy.

If I find her attractive (and I don't mean "she's a 10 in looks" - I'm talking overall, and it's more personality and attitude than looks), and she's feminine, friendly, cooperative, and brings me peace, then I'm definitely going to be motivated to protect and provide for her.
