Do most men shy away from emotional?

Me and this guy I’m with are going through a rough patch. I prefer to talk thoroughly about the issues to reach a resolution, he is more the vague type who gives simple answers. The more I wanna talk about what’s going on is that going to push him away? Would it be best to give him space about it….

There's a wide range of how well men deal with their emotions and with talking about emotions - some handle themselves well and some are terrible and some are in between. Generally, men aren't NEARLY as focused on their emotions as women are, and we certainly only think and talk about emotions a tiny fraction of the amount that most women do, so a lot of men completely lack the vocabulary and the experience in discussing it - and find it embarrassing to have to discuss something they feel so unequipped to talk about. Others just don't care much about emotional things and grow impatient talking about them. And, still others can talk about them clearly and eloquently.

Still, to make a generalization, men aren't likely to be able to talk about emotional things nearly as well as women do. In their own lives, men mostly don't deal directly with their own emotions very often. If something is bothering a man - if he's stressed or worried or sad - he doesn't find someone to talk about it, or doesn't sit and think about his feelings - instead, he TAKES ACTION and FIXES the thing that's causing him to have those feelings in the first place, knowing if he fixes the problem, his emotions will be resolved automatically, and thus, he won't have to deal with them anymore. That's just how males tend to handle most emotions.

It also doesn't help that, on those times when men do share something and allow themselves to be emotionally vulnerable, a lot of women will file that vulnerability away and use it to attack him later. Most men experience that once or twice, and they quickly learn to lock away their emotions and never share them. It doesn't mean they don't have them - they just keep them to themselves in a bid for self-protection. Because men's emotions are mostly kept below the surface, men aren't used to emotional vulnerability, and so if we rarely let ourselves be that way, and it's used against us, it's so painful that we learn it's much better to be closed off.

If you're with a man, and he lets you in emotionally, that's either a sign that he's an idiot with no boundaries (and his life is probably chaotic generally), OR it means that he's emotionally mature AND he has some pretty deep trust with you. Most other men simply aren't going to let you in - they feel too vulnerable, and they've been burned in the past.
