Asking a girls height a way of flirting?

I get it a lot since I am pretty short, but it’s annoying I get it too much and from random guys. Anywhere I walk there will be random guy asking “how tall are you”. When they’re only 5’7 and my boyfriend is 6’2 which my man loves my shortness. But why do guys need to ask that so randomly out of the blue is it really necessary?
Think ima start acting like I’m deaf when they ask me that.
