Always initiating?

The guy I like rarely initates text conversations; however, if I text him first, he will respond almost immediately. I haven’t talked to him in a week now because I haven’t texted him first. Is this a sign I’m not important to him, or is he waiting for me to reach out again?

It’s a complicated situation. He’s my age, but he’s a friend of my dad. If I say something and it goes the way I fear it will, it will be awkward for both of them. My dad is the best guy in the world, and I don’t want to put him in a position to lose his friend or make things weird.
