Why does my boyfriend act so weird on text?

Every time I text him on whatsapp he's not online. He texts me and then immediately goes offline for hours. He's fun in person and mostly on text. But he's offline a lot and he doesn't tell me what he's up to. His behavior is strange to me and I'm hoping he's not playing some games with me.
