Why did his mind go straight to me wanting to date him?

I had a huge crush on my friends brother since a met him at 12 (by the way is it normal to like a guy for two years? lol) and he confronted me a little bit ago and said how people were telling him i liked him, and he's not attracted at to me in that way (OUCH :() and how he not ready to date yet (he's a year old then me). If i didn't tell him directly that i liked him before he confronted me then why would his mind go straight to me wanting to date him? I'm also not ready to date anytime soon.

side note- proud of him for having the courage to talk to me he was very nice about it and said he felt bad
