Why do some average/mediocre men act like they are the prize around hot and very desirable women?

For instance take Simone biles and her current boyfriend. Throughout the whole interview he was dissing her and repeating that she was chasing him and implying that she wasn’t his type and that he only gave her a chance because of her fame while most people don’t even know his name and just refer to him as „Simone biles boyfriend“. I can understand that she is not everyone’s cup of tea but why would anyone be such a dick and speak it out loud several times in an interview? How can one be so delusional?

I personally had a similar experience to this. A guy from college I used to be friends with acted like a total simp for years. We lost sight due to the pandemic and when we met after 2 years he acted super snobby, couldn’t even look me in the eye and acted like he was the prize and kept looking around the room and at other people even though it was his idea to meet up. I never expressed interest in him and tbh he is not a very desirable guy in most women’s eyes. So why would he be Make an effort to act so snobby and dismissive?
