What exactly makes a girl high maintenance?

I remember making a comment towards my mom and saying "I'm not high maintenance" and she was like "pfffft." I was like "I'm not high maintenance" and she looked at me with this "are you kidding me" look. She always jokes around saying "I feel bad for the guy you marry cause he's gonna be broke."

I don't consider myself high maintenance but if she considers me so, she made me that way.

Story aside, what makes a girl or guy high maintenance?

If she's difficult to entertain. Demanding. She needs expensive things. Gifts. She's trendy. It looks like she spends more than a few minutes on her appearance. She 'needs' things that aren't necessary. Picky. Emotionally demanding, and demanding in the sense of a relationship. You have to do all the leg work. Always on the defensive. Big deal if you forget your anniversary. Emotionally unstable, or unstable in any sense. You're always propping her up. You can't leave her alone for more than a day.

Contrast a low-maintenance girl. She doesn't care where we go as long as we're together. She'll eat anywhere. She's not gonna order the most expensive thing on the menu. She's independent. Completely equal relationship wise. Just... effortless.

You can be expensive and not be high-maintenance though. I'm not saying expensive is any better though : \

What everyone wrote below is right.  High maintenance just refers to the fact that the chick is very demanding.  In what?  Depends, but could be anything.  She's someone that wants their way and wants to feel like the guy is going to provide for whatever they happen to be bitching about.  Outside of the money aspect of things, it can also mean she is emotionally demanding, ie. a drama queen.  Bottom line, I consider anyone high maintenance who makes things more difficult than they need to be.  They quickly become "ex-girlfriends" but these days you can spot those chicks a mile away so it usually doesn't even come to that.  The last HM chick I would say I went out with was HM on the money side of things, and not the emotional side.  She wanted to go to expensive restaurants (ie. $16 for a plate for french fries), and yet not even reach for her purse when the bill came...ever.  Good bye and good luck to the next guy.

I think what makes them high maintenance is with talking to her and keeping her interested/ entertained. Its kinda what Christian said, It requires someone to try as hard as they can to keep their boyfriend or girlfriend interested in a conversation. I would try to keep they entertained and happy and all for a couple of months ( I can be too naive when I'm in a relationship >_>). Another signs of her being high maintenance is like me always dropping everything for her, buying her things, always meeting her standards, etc. I don't set standards or expectations in a relationship, other then to respect me and love me. That's all I expect for a girl, if she doesn't or can't do both, Sorry but Adios, I don't tolerate disrespectful or rude women in my life.

IMHO, being high maintenance means that person takes much more energy/resources to please than they are willing to put back into the relationship.

This can be material goods, a certain way you are required to talk to them, a way you must dress when you are with them, and acts of service (taking the garbage out, dishes ,etc). I'm sure there are many more things.

An ex "high maintenance" girlfriend once told me that I didn't care about her because I refused to put in a water softener... Her skin was too dry when she showered at my place. True story.

You ask a lot of great questions! To me it's when she is always overly needy. She always wants you to buy her stuff, she always wants gifts, she won't let you talk to anyone else without being in your face about it. Pretty much you'd need to devote 24/7 of your life to her... and that STILL might not be enough. I love giving my girl attention but I do need a little "ME" time every once in a while. High maintence women are the achilles heel of some women that would be perfect otherwise.

I don't think it's just about materialism. Also girls who constantly need attention, who make a big deal if you don't answer their texts immediately. Who always needs her way, when it comes to choosing movies, restaurant etc.

To me, "High Maintenance" could be either of these 2 (or both):
A. Lots of turn-ons/"demands", as well as whatnot.
B. how badly "she" would act about things they do, and do NOT like. (Like, doing something that "she" wouldn't like. Even if most would see it as mild, but to them, it's still enough to cause severe "damage" to the relationship.)
