Are you aware that a man's brain undergoes physical changes when he become a father? Similar changes happen in a woman's brain after giving birth. It's Mother Nature's way of preparing humans for parenting. Here's the story...

I did know that. My dad said as soon as he saw my brother being born, and he held his son in his arms for the first time, that his entire way of thinking changed! He said it was very different when I was born, he said that although overall it was less profound of a change, his drive to protect increased exponentially when he realized once he had a daughter, he said: “When your brother was born, it was like everything changed. It felt like my entire life up to that point had been a dress rehearsal, but now my life had to be more serious, I mean this is real, and that I needed to protect this little boy until he could protect himself. But when you were born, I had this overwhelming instinctive drive to protect you for the rest of your life!” (or words very close to that effect.)

However, clinically speaking, USC did neurological tests on expectant mothers and fathers, and discovered that both male and female brains change once they have a child. The MRI studies performed on expectant fathers before, and after the birth of their child revealed that father's actually lost brain volume after they became parents! It’s remarkably similar to the loss in female brains when women become mothers, but the loss of brain volume is significantly less in fathers, than it is in mothers. Another example of neurological change in the paternal neuropathology is that studies show oxytocin, also known as the “love” hormone, or bonding hormone increases significantly whenever a man interacts with his new baby. I love reading studies like that! It just goes to show how important fathers really are!

A woman who had more than one child told us that women lose a percentage of their brain cells with every birth. Either the stress of producing a child causes cell loss or the mother has automatic synaptic pruning in her brain to change her expectations so that she can meet the lower mental level of her new born child that might not be accustomed to complex demands.

I guess it makes sense with women. Giving birth causes all kinds of changes in a woman's body. It is an extreme trauma and there are all kinds of chemicals that are released. The guy just sits in the waiting room and then goes in the hospital room when it's all over. No muss, no fuss.
