Why does the guy im talking to not want to be alone with me when he definetly wants me?

I have been talking to this guy for a couple months. He definitely likes me, we text all day and night every day and night. he says that he misses me and can't wait to see me at school and we have so much fun when we hang out but we always hang out in a group of people. Every time i try to hang out alone with him since we started talking he always makes up an excuse, even when we've had set plans with other people and they've cancelled super last minute he cancels straight after with an excuse. When we are together we are very physical without kissing, we've never kissed but we've been VERY physical with each other. He definitely likes me so i'm confused why he doesn't want to be alone with me. before we became more than friends we would hang out alone and have a great time. and when we hang out now its still great and unakward. mutual friends of ours have agreed its weird the way he is in this aspect and i would like some advice.

update: im now dating him and he constantly calls me fat and talks about other women. what do i do? were on our way to meet my parents and i feel so betrayed.
