Why do guys make fun of your appearance and make you secretly wanna cry and then ask if you are mad at them?

This coworker who’s a guy just made a joke about my appearance in front of other guys and another guy laughed and said “wow” at him. I’m a girl and I don't know what I did to deserve this I don’t make comments about anyone’s looks and I wanna cry clearly I am making a mistake giving this guy any attention because he just uses it to turn around and put me down

Right after he said it he asked “are you hurt or mad at me?” So far I have met two grown men who do this. Repeatedly. They ask if I was hurt after they say something about my looks randomly. I don’t get it. They want to confirm that my feelings were hurt?
