Just rip the bandaid off, leave no room for miscommunication or false hope.
That will mean you lose the friend if he’s got any self respect, once a guy decides he wants more there’s no going back and it’s no good for anyone to pretend otherwise

This is the problem with friends trying to take it further. There is nothing you can do if he tries, but it often leads to battered friendships for the reason you bring up, being rejected.

I guess the best way is to say that while you appreciate the feelings, you don't want to risk your friendship with a relationship.

Just tell him you’re flattered, but you’re not interested in him that way. That you value his friendship, and want to keep it like that. If he’s a grownup he should understand, if not he’s too immature to worry about.
