Guys, do men truly compliment a girl bc they like her outfit or?

because they're trying to start a conversation to flirt with her? I know men can appreciate when a girl looks good, but unless they're into fashion (which is gay guys most of the time), y'all could care less, right?

I ask bc a guy told me he "appreciated my holiday outfits". I dressed up with a different holiday outfit during Christmas week bc yes! I do find him attractive, but he has a girlfriend so I'm confused. I just need confirmation so in case they break up I'm at the ready or he just truly thinks my outfits are cute and that's that. I'm the one in the Ms. Claus outfit. Oh and he is younger than me if that makes any difference.

When a guy says something like that, he probably does in fact like your outfit, but usually the push to actually tell you that out loud is because he wants an excuse to talk to you, rather than because your fashion sense is so great he's compelled to comment on it lol. That said, a simple compliment is no guarantee that said guy is into you; he might genuinely just like your outfit and that's it.

Given the context of him having a girlfriend, he's most likely just being nice—or if he is flirting, that means he's unfaithful. Either way, it's not worth your time trying to read into or make anything of it.

True. The first I ever said anything to him was when I almost bumped into him and said sorry. The way he said "you're fine" was almost dreamy. We used to talk every time he saw me. Then something changed. It could've been my age or the fact I hugged a male friend of mine (my friend is autistic and not good at reading social cues... It was awkward). But as far as I know, he had a girlfriend all that time I just didn't know about it. Like you said, he might've just been nice.

Like you said, he’s got a girlfriend, if that’s the case it’s likely he’s not flirting.

I’m no expert in flirting but think lots of times you can sense it’s flirting if tension is being created. If he’s just nice and complimenting that’s peaceful and doesn’t lead to much. But if he’s being a bit playful and either challenging you or teasing it’s more likely he’s flirty.

well... i grew up around gay guys and all my cousins were females so no... that's why i have a hard time with straight guys.

Ok that makes more sense. So you would be surprised if a guy was attracted to you. Well ig then some are nice and others may flirt. But if you are not expecting it

My challenge is knowing when it's flirting or kindness. I used to think if a guy was being nice it's bc he might be attracted. But my whole view has been shook based on what you said in your 2nd comment.

You know, that's an interesting question. I want to say it is possible, but I haven't yet come across a case where a man likes a woman's outfit and expresses it without an ulterior motive. Just to be clear, people thought I was one of the guys who could do that. I thought that too, and had a lot of female friends whose outfits or general appearances I would like and put in words. I also wanted to believe I was straight, but later came into terms with the fact that what I thought was sexual attraction towards women was actually a strong envy to be one myself. The rest is a different discussion...

I didn't mean to digress, but just wanted to clarify that after I became sensitive to gender issues, I started paying a lot of attention to people's behavior such as the one you asked about. Not a scientific study, but all the men whom I observed to show genuine interest in female fashion, makeup, etc., later came out as gay or transgender. What I thought were few exceptions also later turned out more or less smooth actors wanting to get the girl.

So, based on my experience, I'll say that guy may have had at least some passing interest in you. Unless he's a latent transgender person like me, he may have done that to give you a cue, or at least in a more innocent case, made his interest known without thinking much about it.

Is the other girl your friend? If so, that would be a difficult situation. If not, you may wait until the guy becomes free. In today's world where people change partners frequently, your chance may come sooner than later. Good luck!

He has a girlfriend. You're thinking too much about this. If he meant anything beyond just a compliment then he's not the type of guy you want to associate with. Because even if magically he all of a sudden didn't have a girlfriend. He's have no quads about doing the same thing to you.
