I'm guessing A pound is somewhere around $4 US dollars. Any man who wears $1100 shoes and buys a pound of coffee for $24 has their financial priories askew.

I'd guess they're into showing off their highbrow coffee/espresso machine as well as their fancy shoes. And if you're wearing $1000 dollar shoes, you must be sporting $3000 dollar suits, eh?

This isn't a man who's saving for a home. BUT, if they're making the kind of money where they can easily afford such luxuries, I haven't a clue why they DON'T have a house, ooops, unless their closets are full of those shoes and suits.

Means they're wearing $900 suits, right? Again. If you're spending $36 a week to drink 5 cups of coffee, you must have money to burn. Same with the shoes and my guesstimate for a suit.

If said people learned to economize: make your coffee at home, get shoes on sale, go to estate sales (got my son some Cole Haan penny loafers nearly unworn for $7. They're $150 shoes.).

You simply have to put out a little effort.

Not the real culprit is housing PRICES are quite high and the market selection is limited. But the whiners may be depressed, so they spend all their cash on pretty little cups of coffee and shiny shoes to make themselve feel better temporarily. Sigh. It happens.

Gotta have a plan and work real hard to realize it. Spending all your cheddar on incidentals is not the way.

Fact is, the economy is fucked and house prices have risen by about 40% in my neck of the woods since convid 2021. We have close to a million per year net migration, and the population here is projected to rise to 75 million by 2032. Not buying coffee in the morning won't do anything to abate that.

@Levin Not saying it's a simple equation. And no one's suggesting you live a monk's life to get a shitty house in a shitty neighborhood. That leads to another form of misery.

But saving, say, 5700 dollars per year for 4 years (making coffee at home, buying less expensive shoes and suits, eating IN and cooking at home). is an easy goal. I simply multiplied 5 coffees a day, four pairs of expensive shoes a year and four suits a year. I subtracted $1000 dollars from that total, which was $6700 dollars, for less expensive versions, or fewer versions of said items.

In four years' time a person could save 22,800 dollars, a down payment of a 230,000 home. A starter where you'd have to put in sweat equity to fix it up. Nothing move-in.

However, if you have no skills of any kind and are loath to put in any sweat equity in a first home, YES, you're correct. You will have limited opportunities to acquire a home that you could fix up and sell later at a profit.

It will take looking hard, getting the best financial deal, saving and doing some work. Getting a cheap, move-in home in a great neighborhood is impossible unless you're rolling in dough. This might be part of the problem. Unrealistic dreams.

There are no Architectural Digest opportunities anywhere. Everything is fixer-upper, older homes. Brand-new spotless you-make-it-like-you-want -it homes aren't available except in incredibly limited PROGRAMS for the poor and underrepresented first-time home buyers.

Folks have lost sight of their priorities. It's clearly an issue that led to the dawn of idiotic things like social media. The £280 shoes are nothing. A guy I know brags about spending £550 on espadrilles he had custom made to look like authentic espadrilles. Can I tell you? For £550 he could have physically travelled round trip and picked up an authentic pair in a proper bodega.

£10 coffees have been a thing for decades now and isn't going away bc you're paying for the coffee, the seat in the cafe and the wifi. Thank the hipster coffee cults for that one.

No one wants to put in much effort anymore because they've not had to earn their way through things at school, at home, in relationships, or anywhere. It's what makes everyone complain about anxiety issues as if stress is always unhealthy. It's what makes them spend on nonsense to appease and reward themselves for every little thing they do.

It's just part of the new order of things. It's just going to keep getting worse and worse as we continue to coddle children and young adults to ridiculous levels.

inflation has outrun wage increases for the past decades. so men these days objectively get way less for the same work. you can beat on it if you like but the fact is that they're getting less than you did. like you're making fun of a 6 bucks coffee and it isadmittedly ridiculous but back in your first days of labour, a coffee was probably 50 cents. so that goes to show how far money gets you. and the 280 bucks shoes you mentioned today get you 2 mass produced pieces of glued together plastic and a string. back in your day, you could probably have bought a hand crafted individual pair of shoe maker product.
