Why do does this guy watch my stores but not follow me?

There is a guy that I grew up knowing but we haven’t been in contact for years. Recently it’s come out of the blue that he has started watching all my social media stories. A couple of weeks ago I decided to follow him but he never followed me back and continued to watch my stories ( this needs he would constantly have to search my name to watch them. I am confused on what this means as it’s a lot of effort just to see what I’m doing.

This is the most common reason. He may be genuinely curious about what you are up to after years of no contact, but he isn't ready or interested in a real-life reconnection. Watching stories is a low-effort, low-risk way to stay in the loop without the vulnerability of a formal follow or starting a conversation.

He might worry that following you back now would signal more interest than he actually has, or he may be overthinking how a follow-back would be perceived by you or others.

In general people are curious of people, especially ones we grew up with. So he’s probably just curious to see what you are up to in life
