Is this classmate into me or am I overthinking the eye contact?

There's this guy in my class who I've never talked to before. He's a year older and we don't have many mutual so I haven't had much of a chance. He plays hockey with my ex, so I know he knows me. The problem with that is my ex told me that I was pretty popular amongst the hockey guys and a lot of them thought I was good looking. I asked who specifically said that, then he switched and said they were calling me ugly and teasing him for dating me. My ex is a major ass hole, so I don't know if he was lying. Either way, the first name he said was the guy in my class. This was a while ago, but thought some background info may be beneficial. Anyway, we sit next to each other in class (assigned seating) and his friend sits behind him. A few weeks ago, I must've zoned out looking at him, because I snapped out of it and we were making eye contact. Since then, I feel like he's been looking at me and trying to catch my eye, but maybe I'm just more aware of him? He also sits facing me rather than the front, but that may be so he can talk to his friend behind him. I have noticed he fixes his hair a lot and looks in my direction while I'm with friends, but I can't tell if he's looking at me or someone else. I don't have him on anything social media because he only has friends/people he knows personally. I think I tried to follow him a year or two back, and he didn't follow me, so I'm hesitant to try again. I don't know if I should feed into the eye contact or follow him or just wait and see if he makes a move. I'm very awkward and would prefer not to have to sit next to him for the rest of the year knowing I made a fool out of myself. Sorry for the essay. Opinions would be GREATLY appreciated.

I'm not sure why you are certain he knows who you are. Because your ex plays hockey with him? Uh... okay? Guys don't care about (or keep track of) who their teammate's SOs are. We don't have time for that bullshit.

I mean he's been taking my route between classes rather than walking with his friends and he's held the door a few times? He hangs out where I normally do, but again, it may just me because I'm noticing him more now than I did before

Okay, so nothing is for sure. I wasn’t that long ago in high school. Boys not walking with their buddies and instead crossing paths is defo not normal, unless they have a little thing. Is he the shy type?

Yeah, he keeps to himself unless he's with friends. Then he's a little more outgoing, but follows their lead.

Interesting situation. After reading this, I do agree with your input for sure Abby, but I’m not sure how I feel about the situation in its entirety. Asker probably won’t like this feedback, but knowing that he’s my ex’s friend and we all have classes together, I’d probably avoid a love connection. It just sounds like this is all happening in such close proximity, and teenage boys can be just as prone to gossiping as girls are. There already seems to be some talk about the asker, her looks, and whether or not she’s attractive circulating in the locker room amongst the guys, given the fact that her ex made mention of it (not sure if he was joking about that or not). The whole situation just makes me a bit leery. So while yes, I agree that this guy could be trying to get her attention, I’m just not sure what to make of it and it might be better finding a guy who isn’t part of that friend group or hockey team. I don’t think there would necessarily be any harm done in going for it if that’s what Asker decides, since ex’s are meant to be ex’s and he shouldn’t take personally whoever she chooses to pursue. Just be cautious 👍
