A guy friend started asking questions about types of rings -- knowing the type of ring to get his girl... knowing whether to splurge on a real diamond or to get a lab-generated diamond... whether a girl would care which one she got... etc.
I smiled. These aren't casual questions and my young friend was mentally preparing to start shopping around. Luckily our other friend and I are NGD (non-gold-digger) types, so we said go for a good quality band and whatever stone suits the gal's personality... Look at the things she likes already and match the style. I know the girl. She's understated. She won't want a hulking solitaire on her tiny, spindly little hand. So I recommended possibly a flatter smaller cut and setting that will rest snug as a bug on her finger. The other gal agreed.
We also argued for the lab diamond (unless she's a gemologist, which she's not) bc the point is to have something she'll wear every day to remind her of the love of her life. (Teacher/social worker with a giant rock on her hand isn't a thing she'd enjoy.)
He still seemed chagrinned, convinced that something lager and fancier was the way to go... and we both chuckled at him. I then told him about a lunatic who went into Harry Winston guns blazing to replace her "pear cut diamond" with a "princess cut diamond" -- which when you look at the size of the hulking ring in question you wonder what type of crazy the lady actually IS.
It made me wonder a little now many of you guys made yourselves dizzy wondering about this sort of thing.
