They don't wanna get rejected or it is simply put it, they want to find a good standing before they engage in conversation. The Impression is what counts for them.

Many guys, including my favorite Geezer, had Asperger's, before it had a name. When I was in Elementary, I was free, open and knew everything. When puberty struck, at the same time my Mom died, I withdrew and was tongue tied for years.

There are a lot of different reasons. Personally, my inexperience and prior personal situation gave me pause. Fortunately, the second issue has long since been conquered.
