It stands to reason that if someone is involuntarily celibate there must be some cause.

Being unhygenic, lacking social skills, not having integrated in society and so on are all reasonable possibilities. In most cases I'd assume it is crippling anxiety, insecurity and shyness. Yes yes, all the same basic thing.

While I speak from a position of some privilege here, dating really isn't that hard. Be a reasonably normal person and it works out. But there have always been permanent singles since the dawn of time. It is not by any means or stretch of the imagination a new phenomena.

That said, I am willing to bet that 99% of incels would eventually get into relationships if they got some normal-ish friends that they could absorb good habits and traits from. It might sound condescendig but the self-imposed environment is likely the main villain to most.

Barring severe issues anyone can get a decent physique. Anyone can get a decent style too.

If you're in fairly good shape, groomed and dress well, even a literal toad will have some visual charm.

Add in a personality matching well and you can remove the un part.

Obviously appearance is the dating difficulty modifier. Not pretending it is not. That said, had a self-proclaimed hopeless friend when I was 17 or so. We had him get a new haircut, dragged him to try clothes for a few hours, he joined me for muay thai and wouldn't you know it, he had an absolutely adorable girlfriend, personality and looks, shortly after. Guy easily went from a 2 (People wouldn't touch him unless forced) to a strong 6.

He didn't do anything crazy. Whole process was perhaps three months total. The main time consuming bit getting his rampant acne and horrible physique under control.
