It's biology really. It's just like a females inherent need to nurture a small child. We're born to be the protectors so when we see a girl in need of help, our instincts kick in that tell us to lend a hand.
The other reason is that movies and TV teach guys that if you come to a girls rescue, she will want to date you and or have sex with you, even though this is rarely the case.
This is one of the few forms of my male biology that I really hate because it gets me into more trouble than not. It makes it easier for women to manipulate guys into helping them and doing what they want because as a man being confronted with a girl in need, we almost can't refuse. Society and our biology won't let us refuse.

Basically, it makes a guy feel masculine. Like a MAN. You know how some guys make you feel feminine and more like a woman? This is kind of like a male version of that.
Essentially, and in general of course, women want to feel safe, secure, and loved by a strong, masculine guy. And men want to feel like that strong, powerful, competent, masculine guy. A very feminine women, a damsel in distress sometimes, can make him feel that way.
A lot of guys have fantasies of saving some poor girl because guys are taught to be strong and brave and so on, and believe we can't take care of ourselves.
And, certainly, some of us really CAN'T take care of ourselves. Guys don't have to make this one up all the time.
So guys get to feel validated when they can save us when we're in distress.
Whether guys like it or not, they like and enjoy messy girls who need to them to pick up their crap when sh*t hits the ceiling.
It makes them feel needed and wanted where as the girl who doesn't act like a retard is too independent

You invest a little time in them while they're in a bad spot, and when they get into a better position they think it's all thanks to you and so the investment pays off in many ways.
ReeksofStatus took my answer.
But anyways...a female that need some "male assistance" like moving a couch or fixing the kitchen sink, makes him feel more "manly".It can make a man feel useful, needed, appreciated, or valued. As opposed to a woman that makes us feel like she doesn't need us around at all. Almost like we are more likely to get in her way then actually be of any value to her.
Simply put, the feeling of power and control :P
