Why some guys like to play with girls feelings even though they don't want to date them?

I used to have a huge crush on this guy for years and I (unfortunately) discovered that he was using me as back up plan and he wanted me to chase him whenever it was convenient for him. Recently my friends informed me that he is doing that to other girls as well even girls that aren't his type or necessary attractive

So my question is why some guys are behaving like this and is there a specific "type" of girl they are going after in order to play with them?

All I can really say is that it goes both ways. A girl said I sounded wonderful. than all of a sudden acted very weird and said. I don't know who you are; stop contacting me. before I stopped contacting her. I sent her one final message, just explaining how badly she hurt my feelings. In the end, she didn't care and blocked me. It took me 2 years to get over her.

Because guys like being desired. If someone likes them, it gives them an ego boost that they're attractive.

I don't think it makes a difference to them. If any girl gives them attention, it makes them feel good. That doesn't mean he will date those girls. He likes the attention.
