10 Uses for Baking Soda
aka "How to Stay Fresh for BAE"
Sodium Bicarbonate NaHCO₃ (aka baking Soda) is a chemical compoud, commonly used in the average household for keeping the refrigerator fresh, cooking, and teeth whitening. Besides these common benefits, it has many other specific uses that you may not have tried.
Here's my take on uses for baking soda:
Face mask:
Baking Soda is a great face bask. Not only does baking soda treat acne, but it also brightens and evens skin tone, gets rid of scars, and softens the skin through exfoliation. I particularly like using a baking soda + lemon face mask on my face for giving it a soft glow. The above picture shows the outcome of using baking soda on your skin.
Deoderant:
Are you always musty? Do people run at the sight of you? Does it seem as if no hygienal product will ever work for you? Have no fear because baking soda is here! With a little bit of baking soda under your arms, you'll no longer be "that person" smelling like BO.
Insect Bite Treatment:
We all know that insects can be extreme pests. They buzz around you, crawl over you, and surprise you with bites of love which unfortunately leave you in extreme disomfort whether it be itching, burning, stinging, swelling, and so forth. If you ever find yourself out of bug bite treatment, simply mix in a bit of water with baking soda until it's a nice thick paste then spread it over the affected area.
Hair / Hair Tool Cleaner:
Have a lot of build up in your hair that shampoo just doesn't seem to remove? No worries, baking soda has your back. Simply wash your hair as usual then apply baking soda to your scalp and work it down to your ends. (You can also do the no poo method in which you skip pooing and go straight to washing with baking soda). Once you've scrubbed for a few minutes, seconds or however long, rinse it out. If you have any apple cider vinger, make sure to rinse your hair with it as well to neutralize any change in pH. With the BS/ACV combo, your hair should come out clean, soft, and managable. This works for all hair types. Amounts (of time, baking soda, or avc) vary by texture / thickness.
To have clean hair, you styling tools should also be clean. You can also use baking soda and water to soak your brushes, combs and other tools in to remove build up.
General Household cleaner:
Do the leading store brand cleaners not seem to do a decent job at removing build up around your household appliances? Don't fret; baking soda is an excellent replacement to almost all cleaners. It's great for surface cleaning, dish washing, appliance cleaning, and so much more. Here are some of the wonders baking soda can do when cleaning: Pans, Stoves, Irons, Ovens, Floors, Cars
Laundry Detergent Booster:
Does your washing machine or laundry detergent not seem to get the job done anymore? Simply mix half a cup of baking soda in with your clothes. Adding baking soda makes liquid laundry detergent work harder. An improved pH balance makes your clothes, cleaner, brighter, and fresher.
Fruit and Vegetable Cleaner:
For those who buy fruit and veggies regularly, you know that in most cases, they are not clean. While we all do the typical water rinse, it just isn't enough sometimes. A safe alternative to washing fresh foods is sprinking a tad bit of baking soda on a sponge and scrubbing the fruit/vegtable then rinsing. It removes dirt and any other residue from the farm/market.
Fire Extinguisher:
Baking soda is great small fire extinguisher. If you're ever cooking and a grease fire occurs or you accidently start an electric fire, throw baking soda over it (and of course, notify the fire department). The reason baking soda helps instinguish fires is because it releases carbon dioxide when heated which smothers flames.
Mouth Wash:
Is your breath always kickin'? Does it seem like no matter what you do, you just can't get rid of the funk in your mouth? No worries, Bakin' Soda's got your back. A little swish of baking soda and water will neutralize the odor in your mouth. Not cover it up, NEUTRALIZE it! #AMEN NO MORE STANK BREATH FOR YOU!
General Deoterizer:
Baking Soda is a must have for deoterization; most households already use it for keeping their refrigerator fresh, but there are so many more things you could keep fresh with it. It's a great alternative to carpet, shoe, and furniture cleaners/fresheners. Sprinkle some baking soda over the affected area and let it sent then vacuum it up later. If you want to get a little fancy, you can also add your own scents to the mix. You might also find it useful for deoterizing litter boxes, vaccum cleaners, sinks, trashcans, drains, lunch boxes, cars, closests and so much more!
