Considering my best friend eats shit for food (pizzas, greasy stuff, sugary junk) pretty much constantly, does nothing with her life, and weighs 100 pounds, I'm calling bullshit.
I have two jobs that are physically demanding and have nothing but fresh fruits and vegetables in my diet and I weigh double what she weighs and struggle with it.
Some people are born with the ability to eat as they please and do very little to manage their weight. Others, like myself, see chocolate and suddenly we gain 50 pounds.
i have to disagree. yes some people stay slim by moving around a lot but that doesn't mean we all have the same metabolisms. i have a very slow one, while my cousin has a fast one. i just found that out recently when we started working out together. we would walk around at least an hour a day and box twice a week. while i also went to the gym (mostly did cardio, 3 times a week) by myself. i counted all my calories and made sure to eat clean, while she ate whatever she wanted and as much as she wanted. in about 2 months we weighed ourselves, she lost 10 pounds, i lost barely 5. i was working out more then her, going out more (being more active), and eating cleaner while she stayed home a lot and ate whatever she wanted but out of the two of us, she definitely has a faster metabolism.
So how is it back in middle school and high school that I used to eat fast food, donuts, surgery cereals, hot pockets, hot dogs, chicken patties, ice cream, and drink soda daily while spending a vast majority of my leisure time playing xbox, and I was still one of the skinniest guys in my grade? I'm talking 6'0" and 138lbs as of my junior/senior year of high school. Like I literally used to live the most unhealthy lifestyle without ever weightlifting or being on any sports teams. The only thing I did was run, but even then, I only did that occasionally, not regularly. Unless intense brain activity and handling an xbox controller burns thousands of calories, I highly doubt fidgeting would be enough to burn the hundreds of grams of fat I consumed daily, and I don't find myself fidgeting very often at all. I'm not complaining that I was skinny, I'm just saying what else could it be?
I'm not so sure about the 'myth' of a fast metabolism, since my dad is a doctor... and I learned it all from him, buuuut, ALL of the fidgety people I've ever met have been sooooo skinny! Now this just makes so much sense. =)
@Prettyapathetic I do find it hard to believe that there isn't SOME variation between people's metabolisms, even if it's only a few percentage points in either direction. We're not like cars where we run off the same engine, but a genetically diverse species even at the chemical level. It strikes me as a quick judgment to believe that all the processes must be the same between all individuals of similar size.
@PrincessofNohr yes an average 5 year old that weighs 45 lbs and is 3ft10 tall could have a metabolism of 900-1300. Some would be on the higher end of BMR and some would be on the lower end. People with fast metabolisms are on the higher end
Teachers allow for fidget toys now in the classroom to help kids focus, but still move around. What items can count for fidgety students? Pencil grips, cool erasers, swivel chairs, cushions on the seat, a Koosh ball, etc... Should've been around a school classroom in today's world. ;)
Right. There are normal overweight people... and there are asshole skinny people... lol... the revenge is had when those people who "can't gain weight if I tried" get to their 40's and balloon up lol...
Oh gawd leg bouncers in meetings... we've got one in our team and it's sooooo distracting when trying to present 😂
What you said makes sense though, i'm out on site a couple days a week and even with an 'office' job i can kinda eat a lot (calorific restaurant food to) without getting stupidly big.
I move around very little compared to most other people, yet I'm still 5'11" weigh 120 lbs. I don't think I fidget around much or anything. I'm actually very physically inactive.
Over the summer I've stayed inside of my house for the majority of the time, and the majority of that time was spend on my computer not moving. Yet, although I'm 14 and should be gaining weight, I haven't gained a single pound. And it's not like I don't eat enough, I eat about as much as an average person.
Compare that with the other people who go outside like... weekly to do excersise and still gain weight over the summer somehow.
This ^^ is probably not true. We can't really judge unless you actually *weigh* AND write down literally everything that goes into yr mouth, for at least a couple of weeks... but, in studies of people who THOUGHT they had the vaunted "fast metabolism", inevitably, once they'd kept a meticulous journal of everything they actually ate, it turned out that they just... ate a lot less than most people.
This makes a lot of sense. I have never been able to sit 100% still and I have never been over 130lbs (I am approx. 5' 7") even without exercising and after having a baby.
Would it be possible to have too slow or an underperforming metabolism because you're unhealthy? Then the fast meta people just actually have average metabolism like how you said.
There are short-term effects of semi-starvation and starvation (including anorexia nervosa and so on), but (1) those are short-term effects, and (2) those effects have as much to do with nutrient partitioning -- i. e., with how the ingested calories are parceled out and distributed -- as they do with bodyweight regulation itself.
Thyroid problems NEVER cause weight fluctuations of more than 10 or 15 lbs. That's the maximum gain due to the thyroid, even in cases of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (where the thyroid gland literally doesn't work at all).
If someone gains more than about that amount, then that *can't* be blamed on the thyroid. That's a lifestyle issue.
__
In fact, even the American Thyroid Association -- which, if anything, has a vested interest in *exaggerating* the problem -- says only 5-10 pounds on its official website!
What do you think of the one big meal a day diet? I tried it and it worked awesomely well for me. You just eat 1k-2k calories in one big meal, and then you drink water the rest of the day... you drop weight really fast but stay healthy.
lol it's my natural schedule. I haven't had to set an alarm literally in years, with the sole exception of catching a plane or two.
24-hour days were "hardcore" for me (literally 10-15 hours of sleep a week... for years and years and years before I finally took the damn plunge and switched to "days" that suited me better)
Id of thought taking jabs at Britney Spears would of got old for the paps and the press already :D obviously not... but as a fan back the eff off bitch :D beccause it's Britney Bitch :D love her.
She follows me on Twitter too, when she followed me i was like WHAT? lol i had to check but it's legit and she hasn't unfollowed me ever, i'm truly honored, she knows who her true fans are.
I think we are simiar too i think we would get on if we ever met, she has this fun, sort of child like goofy personality and so do i and we are both really nerdy, i bet i could have in-deph convrsations with her about outter space and stuff, i wish i could meet her but it would never happen.
I don't have any kids yet i've always been like that, prob because my dad is always silly and into stuff about space too, the rest probs from both sides of the family because they are both silly and child-like really although not always in a good way but my uncle adrian he's funny especially after a few drinks xD
Eh... not really... lol they can be fun sometimes but they are too selfish and aren't really family orientated people, on both sides of the family we are all firey and spontanious people, i am too and life has gotta be exciting for us and we bore easily and bad crap happens on both sides especially my dads. an uncle completely neglected two kids he and his wife adopted, she died a long while ago but he moved on like nothing happen and both kids ended up being split up and one of them got mixed up with the wrong people. They pretend to be family orientated but i can see they aren't... just sometimes they can be funny.
I am living proof that you can have a fast metabolism. Before I started getting fit and building muscle tone (nothing extreme or non ordinary) I was a couch potato. I couldnt run a mile without having the need to vomit. I just couldnt run it. I couldnt do a single push up. I just had very poor endurance and stamina. I ate whatever I wanted. But I didn't get fat. I have never weighed more than 114 pounds in my life. My waist has never been any larger than 25 1/2 inches and has been 10 inches smaller than my hips since puberty. Now I am fit and I train hard to beat my fitness level. All i got was endurance and muscle definition.
Well... time to start moving more lol. Your takes on fitness and the such have been really beneficial for me... the last one you wrote really hit the nail on the head with the struggle to stay motivated
I already have a decent amount of muscle, and my build comes from swimming/martial arts from my teen years. I just got really fat in college, because, uh, well its college haha.
Its just been about dropping the extra fat for me.
80lbs sounds like a crazy small number, but at yr height that can still be h/w proportionate yeah. You're probably built a lot like I was at yr age, actually (was 6'2" and low 120's).
People who whine about not having any energy, who can't sleep, who can't seem to get anything done, they simply need to embrace one word. One word and one word only.
I'm into fitness and I want to be a graphic designer and I really worry about being unhealthy so this was a helpful take. You seem really knowledgeable about this and I used to be a fitness nerd
I heard of many people who have to work as freelancers and have to work long hours on the computer. Every design can be different. Just this summer I had an internship in a fashion studio and I barely sat down all day. When I sit for long periods I can tell it's hurting my body and when I'm busy with skool I hardly get time to work out unless I make the time
I hear ya, but there will always be *something* you can do -- even if you are super busy. (High-intensity interval training, for instance, only takes about 10 to 15 minutes, plus short warmups and cooldowns.) At the end of the day it's really a matter of setting priorities.
That is true. I used to do the insanity workout. It made me see that any amount of time could have an impact. I found that the more intense or more often you workout, the more emphasis is weighted on recovery
For instance, I don't really do "cardio" other than stair running, which is basically a kind of interval training. The stairs that are on my profile background right now are about 30 floors' worth, and they're pretty close to a major freeway I drive around here. So I can stop off, run those (and/or various combinations of them) a few times, and then get back to my day in less than half an hour. Where you live it's pretty flat, so there probably aren't outdoor things like that (nor is the weather always good for it, the way it is here) -- but obviously there are plenty of *indoor* opportunities basically everywhere.
Yes few outdoors activities but I try to work out at home with h. i. i. t. Exercises, going to the gym when I have a chance though not consistently and thus summer I used someone basketball hoop that's down the patio of my apartment. I could have watched out more for my diet though

Finally someone agrees. If you're a guy and can't gain weight don't blame your metabolism. Blame your diet of eating like a teenage girl.
I eat around 3500 calories a day high in carbs and protein. I have trouble gaining weight
@Octavius What's yr protein source? How much? How are you preparing it? What sort of physical activity do you engage in?
You're pretty tall/big, right? ht/wt?
@Octavius You're not eating enough. Adding on, I guarantee if I added what you ate each day it wouldn't be 3500 calories a day.
@redeyemindtricks how cam you guarantee he doesn't eat 3500 calories a day
which teenage girls are you talking about? athletes eating between 3 - 5 000 calories a day?
Oh gawd leg bouncers in meetings... we've got one in our team and it's sooooo distracting when trying to present 😂

If I could live on 24-hour days, I'd probably do something like that.
I do practice a form of intermittent fasting in general, but my "days" are way longer than 24hr, so a single meal wouldn't be feasible.

How? I might weigh 100 pounds but I eat like a garbage dump and I am the biggest lazy ass. How do I do this?
On second thought, it's probably my thyroid
Thyroid issues don't usually cause more than 5-10 lbs deviation in either direction. Do you have Graves' disease?
Not that I know of. I have gone to the doctor about my thyroid and it's not overactive. Thyroid issues do run in my family.
Lol Im thin, 80 pounds (5'0), and I eat junk and sit on my ass all day, but I DO fidget a lot so that makes sense.
