Have any of you ever had surgery on your TMJ muscle before?

I was wondering if anyone has had surgery on their TMJ muscle before? Whether it be a total reconstruction or simply just them irrigating the area with a hypodermic needle, etc. I have very severe TMD and have had it since I was 14 (most likely because I use to grind my teeth in my sleep when I was little.) Before it didn't hurt it would just lock up then "pop" open. But now, the pain gets so severe that I can't open my mouth more than half an inch wide, and it feels like my jaw locks. My jaw is not aligned anymore so it makes my face look longer and my mouth is kind of crooked.

I researched surgery and noticed there are so many different procedures that can be done. I just want the pain gone and my face to go back to normal. My dentist keeps telling me just use a bite guard, but I used one for two years straight and it did nothing. Have any of you had surgery for this? If so, which procedure did you have done? How much was the pain? Did insurance cover it? Thanks!!!

Hi. I've never had surgery if this kind, but if your dentist cannot recommend anything to you other than what he/she already has, then I suggest you go see a doctor and get some specialist, professional advice on what options are open to you. At least then you can talk about your symptoms and he/she can examine you to come up with the best solution, rather than getting vague ideas from the internet! lol I hope that helps and that you are able to get this sorted! :o)
