I know a lot of guys whose wives made them give up their motorcycles, sports cars, hunting, and other lifelong interests. None of those women would tolerate their fellas telling them what they can or cannot do.
So this question is kind of a litmus test to see how pervasive this inequality truly is.
Do you allow your significant other to make demands of you that undermine your identity?

It’s interesting that the men’s responses are mostly justifying compromise while the women’s responses are flat out ‘no’.
This honestly reflects what i thought i already knew. Dudes are happy to give up their identities if the simplest justification can be presented. Meanwhile women hold firm. They ain’t giving up sh*t! 😂😂😂

A healthy relationship shouldn’t require either person to give up the parts of themselves that make them who they are. There’s a big difference between asking your partner to stop genuinely harmful behavior and expecting them to abandon lifelong passions, friendships, or interests simply because you don’t like them.

If someone told me I had to give up something that has been part of my identity, whether that’s riding motorcycles, a hobby, or time with close friends I wouldn’t see that as love. I’d see it as control. At the same time, I’d expect my partner to extend me the same respect I give her. Boundaries should be mutual, not one-sided.

That said, relationships do involve compromise. If a hobby is putting your family at financial risk, consuming all your time, or creating legitimate safety concerns, then it’s reasonable to have an honest conversation about balancing priorities. That’s different from demanding someone erase part of who they are.

The real litmus test isn’t whether one partner “allows” the other to do something. It’s whether both people respect each other’s autonomy while working together to build a life that supports both individuals. When compromise flows in only one direction, resentment eventually follows.

No. A healthy relationship involves compromise, but compromise isn’t the same as surrendering parts of your identity.

If a hobby, passion, or interest is genuinely important to who you are, your partner shouldn’t be demanding that you give it up, just as you shouldn’t be demanding the same of them. The exception is when the activity is causing real harm to the relationship, finances, health, or family responsibilities.

The standard should be mutual respect, not one person having veto power over the other’s identity. If a sacrifice is made, it should be a choice born from discussion and shared priorities, not a demand backed by guilt or pressure.

It depends on the demand. Healthy relationships require compromise, but they shouldn't require you to abandon your core values, beliefs, or sense of self. The strongest relationships encourage growth while allowing both people to remain authentically themselves.

I never would.
But. , I think it depends on the financial literacy of the partner , if they are hopeless with money they will need to trim some of the toys.

In my case as an Investment manager I hate see waste because compounding is a beautiful thing , but I also don't buy wasteful depreciating items.

So , I don't think the question is black / white in nature , you'd need to see the balance sheet of the individuals themselves , on either side.
