Middle school is when recess stops, so he should consider playing some kind of sports or other activities. A healthier diet and it *should* more or less take care of itself. Kids have tons of energy,
Most children love to run, if you can rekindle that love it will help. Games such as tag, duck duck goose, etc might be a good start.
Diet is the most important part of weight loss. Feed him a diet consisting of mostly fruits and vegetables, remove all sweets and fried foods from his diet.
Burning fat is low intensity cardio. Does he like biking, running, walking, swimming?

It's Simple really, FEED HIM LESS and tell him to go play sports. So that way he can have fun while ignorantly shed pounds = works every time
