Overall I would say they are a good part of the diet, but you don't want to just sit there and eat nothing but nuts. They can be fattening because it is so easy to over eat on them and still not feel full. I would suggest adding nuts to other foods that are more filling so you get the benefits of nuts without the desire to over eat on them.

Eating nuts is fine if you have a handful. They're full of protein and fatty acids.
But don't eat a whole 2 cups of nuts

They are healthy. They have "good fats" such as poly and mono -unsaturated fat. Which helps lose weight, boost your metabolism, and strengthens your heart.

There are bad fats and good fats.

Bad: Trans and too much saturated (some saturated is very necessary actually, especially for guys). But trans is very bad for you.

Good: Poly- and mono- unsaturated fats.

Pecans are a great source of protein and fiber. It's a nice snack to replace unhealthy crap too. I prefer Cashews over pecans personally but all nuts are good to go.

Not all fat is evil. You actually need to eat certain types of fats in order to be healthy and for your body to function like it is suppose to. Sugar is normally a bigger issue on weight loss than fat.

I agree with @heavensgift2girls that sugars, as well as I would add an overabundance of processed carbs (pizza, white bread, pasta, etc) and inactivity contribute to fat gain.

There was a documentary that came out recently about this, Fed Up.

I actually saw Fed Up. I can't believe that the government actually counts pizza as a vegetable.
