Need to? Nope, but I think it does help open up your airways or something. When I played football my coaches told us not to bend over when we were tired because it would fatigue us more. Instead we were supposed to pull our hands on top of our head to help get in more air.

You can see my ribs, I don't think that's overweight.
My lungs are wider than my inner shoulders so my arms are consistently putting pressure on my lungs unless I lift my arms up.
